Not as bad as everyone says...
In fact, it looks very similar to Zen Cart in layout of the admin screens, so I'm guessing it's based on the same open code platform. Also, if you want a professional looking e-commerce site, the available free templates for this look amazing (after a quick google). Of course, you can design your own, if you're so inclined - I personally only found 1994-esque templates for Zen, so finding some nice polished one for an almost identical platform sold me completely..

osCommerce VS. Zen Cart
I was thinking between osCommerce and Zen Cart, so I tried both. osCommerce has very easy back office, but Zen Cart has much more default COMON USEFULL functions, so you do not need to look for plug-in or built it yourself.

Horrible Experience
I had many issues with oscommerce, as it is not very user friendly when it comes to customizing. Then when I was installing an add-on from the os-commerce community, I backed up my files (which they tell you to do in-case anything goes wrong), and the add-on messed up my website, and the backup would not rewrite the files that it was suppose to. So my whole site completely crashed.

Good choice for your E-commerce platform!!!
OsCommerce is definitely very good online store, checkout system is very intuitive what ensures good conversion rates, it's very user-friendly even for non-tech people. The only troubles we had was hosting set-up changes. Standard: if you want to implement your design within the platform or add any custom option you have to spend quite few hours optimizing and embedding it, but it's definitely worth it as it's has huge impact on search engine rankings and success of the store. It's fine, but you need to be a programmer
Honestly, if you're not a programmer (i.e. HTML, CSS and some knowledge of databases), this will be a really frustrating experience. You're better off buying something off the shelf or investing in an online store for $X a month. If you know some programming basics, you can absolutely make a store with photos, set up inventory, etc pretty easily.
