MODx wins over every pre-built CMS I've ever used, and I've used them all ...
In my quest to find the perfect CMS (on any platform), I must have installed and uninstalled over 100 different products, and MODx won over them all... I was looking for specific features in a Content Management System: It had to be flexible enough to work with any design that a client wanted, it had to be easy to install and upgrade, easy for the client to manage content, simple to define editable content areas and dynamic images, be seo friendly and standards compliant... No small task for a CMS... Not only does MODx have these features, it has a ton more that have made my life a lot easier, and my clients happier! I now put a killer CMS behind every site I build, and it doesn't take any more time than it would to build a static site. If you need a CMS, have a bit of patience and want a truly powerful tool, MODx is right for you.

If you like ExpressionEngine you will like MODx
I realize most of the negative comments are coming from people who just briefly took a look at MODx without actually spending a little more time to get to know it. The first time, I tried it, I actually felt that way but after someone compared it to ExpressionEngine (which I love so much), I decided to spend sometime getting to know MODx. My conclusion is that, MODx is even better than ExpressionEngine and it's free. As for comparing it to wordpress, joomla, drupal and Mambo, don't even try. MODx is in a class by it's own. Our company moved to ExpressionEngine because of the nightmare we had with Joomla(worse), drupal and wordpress(better of the 3) especially with clients calling you at night. Now, we use MODx and our clients love it. It saves us a lot of development time without having to sacrifice the design. Give it a try people and you would love it.

Nothing beats it for pure flexibilty
I have been developing web applications and implementing CMS systems since 1995. This is simply the one of the most flexible php based CMS solutions there is. For professional designers / developers, MODx lets you deliver any design and completely stays out of your way. It was built to be a tool for professionals to build sites. Not a newbie toy for the less informed. When someone says "Absolute Trash" it is clear they simply don't have the capacity to read and evaluate. If you are serious about building sites and need a way to make you clients happy without ENDLESS UPDATES THAT BREAK YOUR SITES (DRUPAL) or HTML THAT IS HARD CODED IN THE MODULES (JOOMLA)-- Go straight to modxcms.com and read the docs, jump into the forums (the best community in my opinion) and learn how to use this incredible tool. You will be forever grateful. For the rest of you 1 click ponies.. stop polluting the web and stick to your facebook account and myspace. This is not a NEWBIE toy.

MODx is awesome
I'm embarrassed for some of the reviewers above. If you need a content management system to think for you and you have no idea how to build a website, go to Wordpress and use their default system, [this content removed by moderator]. EndlessWynter - if you wrote more functional software, you'd be a millionaire and not here reviewing CMS products. Back away from your computer... Modx has made me a ton of money. My clients think I'm great because I build them custom websites that they can edit on their own when I'm done. The learning curve requires critical thought and a bit of time in their (very good) forums and wiki's. Once you're familiar with the tools, this is BY FAR the best CMS product for custom websites. Almost every Drupal and Joomla developer I've shared this CMS with has switched.
